"That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh". This verse establishes marriage as a foundational element of human relationships, with the husband and wife becoming a single unit."

State of Marriage
Key Metric
Flourishing marriages require strong foundations. Unfortunately, our culture has seen an erosion of healthy marriages, evidenced by a steep decline in the marriage rate among younger generations
In Greater Charlotte, the divorce rate is higher than both the state and national averages. Additionally, the median age for a first marriage is now nearly 30, reflecting a cultural shift toward later marital commitments. Generational data shows stark contrasts in marriage behavior, with the Silent and Boomer generations reaching nearly universal marriage rates by age 55, while Millennials and Gen Z show a marked decline. Less than 50% of Millennials are married by their late 30s, and the gap appears to be widening with each successive generation. This shift is echoed in the increasing prevalence of cohabitation over marriage among younger generations—especially Millennials and Gen Z—signaling changing views on commitment, family, and covenant relationships.
Divorce data adds another sobering layer. The highest risk for divorce remains within the first 10 years of marriage, with rates tapering off significantly after 25 years. These early-year breakups are most prominent among younger generations, underscoring the fragility of modern marital commitments. As Christian leaders, this data invites us to consider how we can support healthy marriages through discipleship, premarital counseling, and community organizations that uphold marriage as a sacred institution. The opportunity is great for churches, nonprofits, and civic institutions to collaborate in restoring a vision for marriage as a lifelong partnership centered in Christ, and rooted in sacrificial love and service.
By The Numbers

Scripture Reflection
Scriptures we’ve collected to help you consider this reality through the lens of Christianity.
"Husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing respect for your wife, so that your prayers will not be hindered."
“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
Prayer Topics
Suggestions to help you connect this reality to your prayers.
Pray for the marriages of our pastors and church leaders across the city. Pray that their journey towards oneness would allow their marriage to serve as an example to those they lead.
Pray for pastors and church leaders to raise the banner of marriage and it’s influence in our community. Since 72% of churches in the US lack a substantive marriage ministry, church leaders have the opportunity to influence so many more marriages.
Pray for unity of churches, non-profits, counselors, business leaders and marriage leaders across the Queen City so we can collectively partner together to reduce divorce and raise up healthy marriages in our community.
